Rugby Group Benevolent Fund

The Rugby Group Benevolent Fund was set up in 1955 with the original aim of supporting the welfare of employees, former employees and their dependants. Its remit included supplying free coal to retired workers at Christmas.

Today, the fund still retains its original objective but has widened its scope to include charitable causes in the communities in which its employees, former employees and their dependants live. Projects it supports must provide public benefit in the areas around former or existing cement plants and quarries.

The operations of the former Rugby Group became a part of CEMEX UK, one of the world’s leading cement manufacturers, in 2005. While supported by CEMEX UK, the fund retains its independence and is managed by a board of trustees made up of employees and former employees.

The fund is a company limited by guarantee and does not have share capital. Its directors are trustees appointed by the board. It does not actively fundraise and aims to continue its work through careful stewardship of its existing investments.

In the last five years of its existence (2010-2014), the Fund has provided donations approaching £1.5 million to a wide range of community, charitable and sporting projects.
