CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) (NYSE: CX) announced today that its Soto Pajares Quarry, located in Spain, won the Special Award for Biodiversity during the 2013 Sustainable Development Awards for its outstanding actions related to the protection, enhancement and creation of key habitats for important species. The award was granted by the European Aggregates Association (“UEPG”) during its triennial awards ceremony.
CEMEX’s Rugeley Quarry, located in the United Kingdom, received a Recognition of Achievement for its significant restoration work and its excellent habitat management activities.
Both projects are developed by CEMEX in close collaboration with SEO/BirdLife and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (“RSPB”), BirdLife International’s partners in Spain and the United Kingdom, respectively, and won the national biodiversity award in 2012 from their corresponding trade associations.
In addition, CEMEX France also got a Recognition of Achievement for one of its projects, due to its remarkable economic contribution and added value to society.
These new UEPG Awards emphasize CEMEX’s commitment to conduct its operations in a sustainable manner, since they elected us winners within a group of 52 applications from 14 countries that presented the best management activities being developed by the European aggregates industry at the moment.
“A central part of CEMEX’s business strategy is to integrate biodiversity throughout its operations, seeking to create environmental conditions similar to or better than those that were present at the very beginning of the quarries’ life cycles,” said Luis Farias, CEMEX’s Senior Vice President of Energy and Sustainability. “Our partnership with BirdLife International plays a significant role on this”, he added.
The award ceremony took place in Brussels on November 27th, 2013, and was hosted by members of the European Union’s assembly of regional and local representatives.
UEPG stands for "Union Européenne des Producteurs de Granulats" (European Aggregates Association). Since 1987, UEPG promotes the interests of the European aggregates industry by representing its Members from 29 countries on economic, technical, health & safety and environmental policy.
