Cemex Asphalt Invests in Salford Tanks for Improved Efficiency, Safety, and Sustainability

October 14, 2024
Global building materials solutions supplier Cemex has announced the completion of a £0.5 million upgrade at its Salford Asphalt Plant in a largescale effort to improve efficiency, safety (H&S) and sustainability across its UK operations and beyond.

The Salford project involved reducing the current number of bitumen tanks from five to three, by installing new, larger and more energy-efficient replacements. This upgrade also included a relocation of the tanks to a new location, providing a dedicated waiting area for customer collection and a safer zone for tanker deliveries. This follows the replacement of bitumen takes at its Preston site last year.

Scott Jones, Director of Asphalt and Paving Solutions for Cemex EMEA, comments: “The new tanks at Salford are more energy efficient, helping Cemex to run a more sustainable operation. In line with our dedicated climate action strategy, Future in Action, this is the latest stage of Cemex’s plan to replace all of the bitumen tanks at its UK asphalt locations with newer, more efficient models. Cemex was recently recognised by the Mineral Products Association for its bitumen system management, winning a Health & Safety award at the 2023 ceremony.”

Scott Jones added: “Cemex’s commitment to continuous improvement continues with a number of investments across the regions, which are helping us to operate more efficiently. At Ellesmere, a 35-year old dryer machine will be replaced with a new, more efficient machine at the end October, whilst at Sheffield, Huyton and Preston, important weighbridge replacement programmes have future-proofed the sites for another 25-30 years. The bag house at Preston has also been replaced in June this year, with a better design, to aid extraction and improve overall operational efficiency by filtering the extraction air from the burner. And in Docklands, an important new screen shaft has been installed to reduce waste and offer more consistency and quality control.”

Asphalt plays a key part in Cemex’s Urbanisation Solutions product portfolio, which has a continuous focus on bringing more sustainable solutions to market to help meet the challenges of modern urbanisation. As an organisation, Cemex has been working hard in this field and in the last 24 months made some significant headway; investing heavily in the development of new solutions used in the company’s road surfacing operations across Europe, but particularly in the UK where demand is highest.
