Cemex plans investments into Rugby Cement Plant to support county’s progress towards Net Zero

May 05, 2023
Cemex has announced plans for investments into its UK cement plant in Rugby, Warwickshire. This sizeable development will ensure the plant plays its part to reduce emissions across the West Midlands, while demonstrating the business’s commitment to the region.

The investment would allow the site to make use of materials in the final milling stage that improve the sustainability of the cement product, as well as enhance the milling capacity and other improvements to the site’s manufacturing capabilities. These changes will result in a reduction of CO2 per tonne of cement produced at Rugby, a further step in Cemex’s journey towards operating as a net zero business globally by 2050.
This project establishes Cemex’s long-term confidence in the region and represents a considerable investment in the local, regional and national economy and the ability of the construction industry to support continued economic growth.
Phil Baynes-Clarke, Director of Cement Operations for Cemex UK, commented: “Cemex is a major employer and investor across the West Midlands, and we are proud to be based here. Our Rugby Cement Plant is home to the largest cement kiln in the country, and this planned investment will benefit our customers, the region and the wider environment.
“Climate change is a major issue for us all and this project represents a further step on the continued journey to reduce CO2 in every tonne of cement we produce.”
Cemex acknowledges the role that the private sector must make alongside the West Midlands Combined Authority to ensure the region achieves net zero. Last year, Cemex signed up to the West Midlands Net Zero Business Pledge, becoming one of the largest organisations to have done this so far.
The plans for this project will be presented in a public exhibition on Thursday 11th May at St Matthew’s and St. Oswald’s Church Hall, Lawford Road, CV21 2HR between 2pm and 8pm, with the intention of submitting the planning application during June 2023. For those who cannot attend the exhibition, information will be shared on Cemex’s UK website and social media platforms on 11th May.
