Circular Economy

The Circular Economy

Committed to a Sustainable Future

We're committed to a sustainable future by integrating circular economy principles. This transformative approach prioritizes sustainable resource use and waste reduction. From reusing materials to developing easily recyclable products, we're reducing waste, conserving resources, and innovating to minimize our environmental impact. By prioritizing sustainability, we're creating a better world for future generations.

Reducing CO₂ Emissions through Circular Economy Principles

Every year society generates over 2 billion tons of waste worldwide. Most municipal and industrial waste is disposed of in landfills, which leads to soil and water pollution and creates methane. This greenhouse gas is up to 80 times more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide. Circular economy solutions offer a way to break free from the linear take-make-waste model by reducing waste and pollution and keeping materials and products in use for longer. Implementing circular economy principles leads to benefits such as reducing the demand for virgin raw materials, decreasing carbon emissions, creating new business opportunities, and improving resource efficiency. Furthermore, a circular economy can contribute to economic growth and job creation by promoting innovation and developing new technologies and services.

Waste Generation

94 % of our waste is reused, recycled or recovered.

Only 6% is disposed of.

Waste Management

This is 67 times more than the non-recyclable waste we generated.

0.4 Million tons of non-recyclable waste generated.

Regenera: Committed to Circularity

With over 20 years of experience in waste management, we proudly launched Regenera, a business specializing in providing circularity solutions that extend the life cycle of products and materials.

Our tailored services include waste reception, management, recycling, and coprocessing. By using waste and industrial byproducts as sustainable substitutes, we aim to reduce the raw materials extracted from our planet. At Regenera, we strive to enable a collaborative circular economy, certifying waste re-utilization and adequate disposal to help our partners have more efficient waste streams.

Turning Industry By-Products into Valuable Resources

The cement and concrete industries have a unique ability to transform many residues into valuable materials. At Cemex, we're committed to using this potential to reduce waste and build a more sustainable future. By prioritizing circular economy principles in our manufacturing processes, we become waste consumers and actively contribute to reducing our CO₂ emissions.

We work with other industries, authorities, and communities to maximize the use of society's and other industries' non-recyclable waste and by-products, focusing on municipal and industrial waste, Construction, Demolition, and Excavation (CDE) waste, and other waste and industry by-products.

We are committed to exploring alternative raw materials and waste by-products to reduce environmental impact. In 2022, we replaced 10 million tons of raw materials with by-products and waste from other industries. We can replace part of the clinker with by-products and recycle materials as cement substitutes in our cement and ready-mix production processes. We also aim to maximize the reuse of cement kiln dust in the production loop and recover it for other uses when impossible.
