An Introduction To Cemex

Introducing Cemex

Cemex is a global construction materials company that is building a better future through more sustainable products and solutions. Founded in 1909, we manufacture and distribute cement, Readymix concrete and aggregates throughout our global trading network which is now close to 100 countries across the world.

We employ around 43,000 people across 5 continents, and we are committed to a culture that prioritises the wellbeing, health and safety of all our employees.

Our UK Operations

We are proud of our heritage and our status as a long-standing partner to the industry and the communities we work in and alongside. Our UK business employs around 2,000 people across the country and is a part of our wider EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa) region.

Our operations in the UK can be traced back to 1826 when a small family business owned by Thomas Walker and his son George Walker started producing lime mortar in Rugby. This business was eventually acquired by RMC in the year 2000. RMC's own history dates back to the 1930's when Kjeld Ammentorp is credited with founding the organisation and establishing the UK's first Readymix Concrete Plant. RMC were in turn acquired by Cemex in 2005.

What We Do

We produce more sustainable, innovative building and construction materials that help to provide new homes, schools, leisure facilities, hospitals, retail centres, road and rail improvements alongside other vital building and infrastructure projects right across the UK.

We offer aggregates, cement, readymix concrete and urbanisation solutions, powered by a workforce who are skilled, passionate, collaborative and focused on providing a superior customer experience enabled by digital technologies.

Aggregates

Aggregates, often referred to as minerals, form the very foundations of our society. They are primarily used across the building and construction industries and include sand, gravel and rock. Our materials team are responsible for the extraction of aggregates from the ground where our quarries are located and from the seabed where our marine team operates.

These aggregates are then processed to ensure they meet the highest quality standards in order to be used in our products. They form part of our readymix concrete (alongside cement, admixtures and water) where they serve as reinforcement to add strength to the overall mix. The sand, gravel and rock aggregates that our materials team produces are also sold as products in their own right to a range of different customers including builders merchants, construction contractors and professional local builders.

Cement

Cement is a binding agent which, when mixed with aggregates and water, produces concrete.

We help our customers improve the sustainability credentials of their products and projects with technical advice and the correct selection of product type. We are on a journey to decarbonise our cement making operations as part of our wider 2050 ambitions to become a net zero carbon business and whilst we recognise there is still a lot more to do, we're proud of our achievements to date.

At our Rugby cement plant, we are using an alternative fuel made from non-recyclable waste to help produce more sustainable cements. By using our innovative and pioneering Climafuel® solution we have significantly reduced the use of traditional fossil fuels in our cement production, which has contributed to a reduction of 41% in our carbon emissions across our European operations since 1990.

Readymix Concrete

Concrete is the second most consumed material in the world after water. It is made from a combination of cement, aggregates, admixtures, and water. Concrete has a wide range of uses across the building and construction industries from foundations to interior and exterior surfaces. It is commonly used in the building of new homes, schools, hospitals, leisure facilities and shopping centres as well as in road, rail and other vital infrastructure projects.

Cemex has pioneered the production of readymix concrete in the UK and has developed a range of high quality and innovative products for the building and construction industries. Our cutting-edge admixture solutions help to create more sustainable concrete products with additional benefits for our customers including quality, reliability, workability, durability, and aesthetics.

Alongside standard readymix concrete, we produce architectural and decorative concrete, rapid-setting concrete, high-durability concrete, fibre-reinforced concrete, void-fill concrete, pervious concrete and self-compacting concrete.
