May 16, 2024
Monterrey, Mexico. May 16, 2024. The Boston College Centre for Corporate Citizenship (BCCCC) recognized Cemex for its social impact initiatives with two Innovation Awards in the categories of Eco-Innovator and Social-Impact Changemaker.

The VeryNile initiative, winner in the Eco-Innovator category, aims to preserve the Nile River through responsible activities such as waste collection. Through this project, Cemex has transformed over 250 tons of non-recyclable waste into an alternative fuel at its Assiut cement plant in Egypt. This initiative has alleviated pollution issues in the local ecosystems and improved water quality for the community, while also providing stable jobs and income for fishermen and women affected by Nile contamination.

The second winning project in the Social-Impact Changemaker category was Building Social Infrastructure Together. This initiative prioritizes the construction of sustainable infrastructure in collaboration with local authorities and organizations, providing materials for enhanced housing, access roads, and community spaces in Colombia. Through 109 social infrastructure projects, Cemex has contributed to improvements in the lives of nearly 200,000 people, empowering communities to self-manage available resources.

These awards are a testament to Cemex’s social impact strategy which is focused on making a positive and lasting difference in the communities in which Cemex operates. Cemex executes this strategy in collaboration with community leaders and local stakeholders.

The Boston College Centre for Corporate Citizenship’s Innovation Awards honour and celebrate the achievements of forward-thinking companies that apply their business assets to create positive social and environmental impacts.
